  M60 Motorway to Widen

Crusader Technologies have been awarded the contract to implement and support a Laserfiche™ EDM solution for the joint venture works between Mcalpine and AMEC to widen the M60 Manchester Ring Road.

The £102 million contract to design and construct the M60 Widening project was awarded to the AMEC/Alfred McAlpine Joint Venture on 3 March of this year.

Parkman will be acting as the Highways Agency's site representatives to ensure that the requirements of the contract are satisfied. Works on site will commence at the end of July.

The contract to widen the motorway will be carried out in three phases.

Phase 1 is already underway and during this first 4-month period the contractor, with its designer Halcrow, will be carrying out the detailed design of the works.

Phase 2 marks the start of works on site and the continuation of the detailed design. During June the contractor aims to establish offices for the project close to the motorway site ready for a start of construction at the end of July. The works in this phase will be off the line of the existing motorway and will include embankment widening, screen mounding, utility diversions and start of bridge construction. There will be minimal traffic management on the motorway during this phase.

Phase 3 starting some 8 months later in spring 2004 will be the major part of the works involving traffic management on the motorway. These works will be designed to ensure that traffic lanes are maintained at peak times but will include speed restrictions, overnight motorway closures and slip road closures. The whole of the widening work is programmed to be completed by Spring 2006.
